About Visapur Fort Trek from Pune Visapur Fort Trek is one of the most thrilling day treks that passes through different villages, trails, and a stunning waterfall. The picturesque fort is located near the village of Visapur and was built as a twin fort to the famous Lohagad Fort, a one of a kind experience for thrill-seekers and trek enthusiasts. This trek is a perfect escape from the crowded cities into the wilderness and mountains that keep calling you again and again. This trek is majorly conducted during monsoon, when there is greenery all around, the trees smell fresh, the cool breeze hits your face, and the clouds look like heaps of cotton candy, together giving you a heavenly experience and the refreshment one needs to de-stress on weekends. A lot of people trek to the fort on weekends, especially from Pune, Mumbai, and Lonavala, due to its close accessibility. The Visapur Fort trek takes about 2 hours from the base village trail to reach the summit for experienced trekkers. It was built between 1713 and 1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, much later than the famous Lohagad Fort but on a hill much higher than it. This fort was not much accessed and hence, even today, it retains some remains of the ancient architecture and Peshwa era ruins that attract history buffs every year. The fort has a huge carving of Lord Hanuman establishing him as the deity of the kingdom, though the fort could not stay intact as neighboring villages attacked it to expand their kingdoms. The British also attacked Lohagad Fort by placing cannons at Visapur Fort, conquering both forts in 1800 AD. The fort is now maintained by the Tourism Department of Maharashtra and remains a favorite trekking destination during the monsoons. An aesthetic dream for content creators when it rains, the trek gives you a feeling of walking through the clouds and brings peace to the mind and soul. This twin fort can be accessed via three routes, one from Patan village, one from Bhaje Caves, and the third from Gaimukh Khind. The trails are full of greenery during the monsoon and barren during the rest of the year. The route to the fort gives you a sense of how powerful the Maratha Kingdom was, given the resources available at this height. Visapur Fort Trek is a moderate elevation trek located at 3,567 ft above sea level, providing a spectacular view of its surroundings. It is suitable for beginners and gives you a great first-time experience. Easily accessible from Pune, Mumbai, and Lonavala via railways, this fort is a window into the past for history lovers and lets you easily imagine the grandeur it must have had during the Maratha Empire era. The fort has caves, streams of water, a decorated arch, and some old houses. Exploring the interiors of the fort can take a good 2 hours. Best time to visit Visapur Fort The best time to visit Visapur Fort is during the monsoon, June to September, when the famous rock-cut steps overflow with water, waterfalls flow across the plateau, and the fort is wrapped in mist and cloud, the classic Visapur experience. Winter, October to February, is the other ideal window: clear skies, no fog, and full views of the surrounding forts make it perfect for exploring the fort in detail. Summer is less suitable, as there is little tree cover on top and the climb gets hot. The monsoon trail is slippery with low visibility, so proper trekking shoes and a guided group matter most in the rains. How to reach Visapur Fort By train: Take a local train to Malavli station, between Lonavala and Pune, and walk towards Bhaje village, the trek base, or get down at Lonavala, well connected from Mumbai and Pune, and take a cab or jeep the roughly 15 km to the base. On our guided batches, you meet our trek leader at Lonavala station and travel to the base by private jeep. By road: Drive to Malavli, then towards Bhaje village, where you can park (small fee, at your own risk) and begin the trek. From Pune it is roughly 65 km; from Mumbai roughly 105 km via the Expressway. Note that the road from Malavli to Lohagadwadi is in poor condition and steep, so an SUV is advisable if self-driving to that base. The three routes up Visapur Fort There are three trekking routes to the top. The Gaimukh Khind (waterfall) route is the most popular, starting near Lohagadwadi, with a monsoon waterfall flowing down the trail and taking about an hour to the fort. The Bhaja Caves route is the second most popular, combining the ancient Bhaja Caves with the climb. The Patan Village route is the least used and hardest to trace, and is better avoided without a guide.
