About Ratangad Trek from Pune Ratan means Jewel in Hindi. This hill fort is indeed a jewel among all the hill forts here in the Sahyadri. It is located in the district of Ahmednagar and stands about 4255 feet above sea level. It lies in the Ajoba mountain range, surrounded by the great mountains of Kulang, Alang, Kalsubai, Katarabai, Ajoba and Ghanchakkar. Geographically, Ratangad is at the banks of Bhandardara lake in Ahmednagar district. With views of the lake and the highest mountains in the Sahyadris, it looks very much lost in time. At the base of this fort is the ancient Lord Shiva (Amruteshwar) temple. About 1000 years old, the Amruteshwar Temple at Ratanwadi is an absolute paragon of the high-class architecture of our ancestors. Ratangad, located in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, is a trekking destination that offers a rich blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Ratangad trek is an easy to moderate level trek. It takes around 4-5 hours to reach the Ratangad fort. You will have a stimulating trekking experience that energizes your entire mind and body. There are many routes to the Ratangad fort, and the most popular is the route from Ratanwadi village. Along the way, you will come across various caves that visitors use for camping, where you can sit with your group and enjoy the local food. The trek to Ratangad typically begins from the village of Ratanwadi, which is the base camp for this adventure. Ratanwadi is easily accessible from Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik, making it a convenient starting point for trekkers. The journey to Ratanwadi is an experience in itself, as you traverse winding roads that cut through picturesque rural landscapes. The trek comprises both an uphill climb and a level walk. The initial ascent is moderately steep, with a well-marked trail. Trekkers will pass through dense forests, crossing several streams, and eventually arrive at a point known as "Ganesh Darwaja," a stone entrance to the fort. From here, the trail becomes more challenging, with steep rock patches, but iron railings are provided to assist climbers. Ratangad trek best time to visit? How to reach Ratangad trek from Pune? By Road: The easiest way is by driving or taking a taxi from Pune to the base village of Ratangad Fort. The distance is approximately 190 kilometers, and it takes around 4-5 hours, depending on traffic and the route you choose. By Bus: You can also take a state transport bus from Pune to Igatpuri or Bhandardara, both of which are near Ratangad. From there, you can take a local taxi or another bus to reach the base village. By Train: If you prefer the train, you can take one from Pune to Igatpuri Railway Station. From there, follow the same steps as above to reach the base village. How to reach Ratangad trek from Mumbai? By Train: Take a train from Mumbai to Igatpuri Railway Station, the closest station to the fort. Many trains connect Mumbai to Igatpuri, and the journey takes around 2-3 hours. By Road: From Igatpuri, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach the base village of Ratangad Fort. It is about 35 kilometers away, and the journey takes around 1-2 hours.
