Its towering bastions, grand gateways, and secret escape routes narrate tales of strategic brilliance and valor. Whether approached through a thrilling trek or by the scenic ropeway, every step towards Raigad is a pilgrimage into the heart of Maratha pride. Raigad Fort, the grand capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's empire, stands as a testament to Maratha valor and strategic brilliance. Though time has left much of it in ruins, the fort still echoes with stories of its glorious past. Within its mighty walls lie the remnants of a once-thriving kingdom, including the Queen's Quarters, the Public Durbar, towering watchtowers, grand gateways, sacred temples, and ancient water tanks that sustained the fort's inhabitants. The Queen's Quarters, designed for the royal consorts and their attendants, comprised six chambers, offering both privacy and security. The heart of the fort, where the grand Raj Sabha (Royal Court) once stood, was originally built of wood — only its sturdy stone pillars remain, whispering tales of diplomacy and governance. Three towering watchtowers, now in ruins, once provided an unbroken view of the surrounding Sahyadri ranges, allowing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's forces to detect threats from afar. The Maha Darwaza, an awe-inspiring gateway, still stands tall, a symbol of the fort's impenetrable defenses. This massive entrance, built to withstand enemy invasions, led into the core of the stronghold. However, the King and his royal convoy would enter through the Palkhi Darwaza, a grand yet reserved entrance befitting his stature. Near this entrance, three deep, dark chambers served as the fort's granaries, ensuring the Marathas could sustain prolonged battles without running out of supplies. One of Raigad Fort's most revered landmarks is the majestic statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which stands proudly facing the ruins of the once-bustling market avenue. This market, designed with elevated platforms on both sides, allowed merchants to conduct trade while mounted warriors could shop without dismounting. Just a short distance away lies the Samadhi (memorial) of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, where the spirit of the great warrior king continues to inspire visitors. Beside him rests Waghya, his loyal dog, whose unwavering devotion earned him a place alongside his master. Trek highlights Rajwada (Royal Palace): the main residence of Shivaji Maharaj — only the stone base remains today, but it gives a clear layout of the royal complex. Nagarkhana Darwaja: the gateway to the fort's Public Durbar, where royal decrees were once announced. Maha Darwaza: the massive twin-gated main entrance, built to withstand elephant attacks. Jagadishwar Temple: Shivaji Maharaj's personal place of worship, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Samadhi of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: the resting place of the great Maratha king, near the Jagadishwar Temple. Takmak Tok (Execution Point): a cliff-edge viewpoint, once used for executions, now a stunning lookout. Hirakani Buruj: named for the legend of Hirakani, a brave woman said to have scaled the fort walls to reach her child. Raigad Fort Trek from Pune This trek is a deep dive into Maratha history, with an expert guide narrating stories at every key monument along the way. On Day 2, the ascent from Pachad begins early: reach the base by around 5:00 AM, start climbing the historic steps by 5:30 AM towards the Maha Darwaza, and reach the summit by around 7:30 AM for a guided exploration of the fort — the Maha Darwaza, Raj Bhavan, Nagarkhana Darwaja, Raj Sabha, Rani Vasa (Queen's Quarters), Bazarpeth (Market Avenue), Takmak Tok, Jagadishwar Temple, and the Samadhi of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj alongside his loyal dog Waghya. After lunch around 1:30 PM, the descent retraces the same historic path back to Pachad by around 4:00 PM, with time permitting to also visit the Jijamata Samadhi, before departing for Pune in the evening.
