Kalsubai Peak Trek from Pune Standing at 5,400 feet (1,646 metres) above sea level, Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra — earning it the nickname the "Everest of Maharashtra." Located in the Ahmednagar (Nagar) district within the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, the trek winds through waterfalls, dense forest, paddy fields and open grasslands before the famous iron-ladder summit climb. It is easily accessible from Pune, making it one of the most popular weekend treks for Pune trekkers and a favourite first summit for beginners with reasonable fitness. The trek to the top is roughly 5.5 km one way (around 13 km round trip), taking 3-4 hours to ascend and 2-3 hours to descend. From the summit you get breathtaking panoramic views across all of Bhandardara. At the mountain's peak sits the Kalsubai Temple, where pilgrims from nearby villages come to seek blessings. It's believed that a young village girl named Kalsubai once lived in these hills, curing villagers and animals and helping with farming. One day she climbed to the summit and never returned — so to honour her, the villagers built a small temple at her home on the mountainside, while the main temple was raised at the very top. The Kalsubai trek offers sweeping views of many mighty Sahyadri forts, including Alang, Madan, Kulang, Ratangad Fort, Ajoba Parvat, Bhandardara Lake and Wilson Dam. Trekking to these forts is hugely popular among Maharashtra trekkers in the post-monsoon season. You can also spot fireflies along the Kalsubai trek route just before the monsoon. For a few weeks in the pre-monsoon period, a thick blanket of clouds settles below the summit, creating a stunning cloud carpet visible for miles. On a clear day, you'll also catch grand views of surrounding forts such as Harihargad, Harishchandragad and Katrabai. Many experienced trekkers combine these routes for an added challenge. Best time for the Kalsubai trek: November to February offers the most pleasant weather and clear sunrise views, making it ideal for beginners and night treks. The monsoon season brings lush greenery, waterfalls and dramatic fog — though the peak is then covered with thick, never-moving cloud and high-speed winds, so only day treks are run during this period. Post-monsoon, night treks to Kalsubai are conducted to avoid the hot, humid daytime conditions, and they are especially popular among hikers for the spectacular summit sunrise.
